Zakat is a pillar of Islam and an obligation for every Muslim whose wealth meets the nisab (minimum threshold) over a full lunar year.
👉 The principle: when the total value of your wealth (cash, gold, savings, merchandise, etc.) reaches or exceeds the nisab—equivalent to 85g of gold (approximately €5,950)—you are required to pay 2.5% of this amount as Zakat al-Mal.
To include in the calculation:
– Cash and bank accounts
– Savings, investments, shares, liquid cryptocurrencies
– Gold and silver (current market value)
– Stock or merchandise intended for sale
– Reliable debts owed to you (recoverable funds)
To deduct:
– Due debts (loans, bills to be paid, etc.)
💡 Example: if your net wealth is €10,000, your Zakat is €10,000 × 2.5% = €250.
Zakat al-Fitr (at the end of Ramadan) is different: it is approximately €8 per person dependent upon the household.
